Biography and Artist's Statement
A California native, I've been an artist for the last 30+ years, working with sculptural and functional ceramics, altered books, painting and drawings.
My figurative sculptural work complements and informs my paintings, my pottery (see www.paxceramica.com), my pencil portraiture, and vice versa. The painting featured on this page was one of my first. My painting instructor challenged us to do a self-portrait in the style of an artist we admire. As a huge fan of van Gogh, I couldn't have chosen anyone else.
I strive to create art that satisfies deeply felt archetypes of form and feeling. I find it remarkable how the smallest adjustment to line or curve, or the slightest change in angle or thickness can transform a work of art from one that is attractive to one that is sublime.
My passion for creating art followed decades of exploring art and architecture around the world. From the weighty perfection of the ancient world, to the sinuous, voluptuous art nouveau and beyond, so many styles reflect and satisfy core needs of the human soul. They have inspired me to look within for form, direction and nuance in my work.
